Hitching Post

Good day for getting hitched. So say the Supremes. The Defense of Marriage Act dumped. Mostly. 5-4. A different mix of Justices say Prop 8 in California is also ditched. Mostly. 5-4. Stars of the day. Ted Olson, David Boies & Co. Congrats! Champion of equal rights for every American. Anthony Kennedy.

In Massachusetts, Pats have untethered the reins from Hernandez. Arrested in North Attleboro. Ed Markey, a Democrat, goes to the Senate to take Kerry’s post. In Northampton, it’s a happy gay day. And, we get to pay more property taxes.

Side Trek Falls

Travelled to our favorite SideTrek tableau, Shelburne, a new way. Took a bucolic route from Conway past Bill Cosby’s rolling colonial acres. Off off the beaten trek. A blue clapboard Garrison on an old post road. Book mills, inns dot the meandering byway, scenes of Indian skirmishes as part of the Mohawk trail.

The Bridge of Flowers was in earlier than normal bloom. Town is abuzz. Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin are coming. They will be filming  Labor Day based on a novel by Joyce Maynard. It’s about a 13 year-old boy, his Mom, secrets. Set in a fictional New England hamlet, Holton Mills. Juno director, Jason Reitman.

We made a stop at Wandering Moon jewelry boutique and hit pay dirt. For me. Silver bracelet by a Manitoba artisan. Owner Laura Roberson’s finely crafted earrings. As we headed out to Route 112, a metal sculpture guy bid us adieu.

Back home through Goshen past the original 1775 Williams House.

Capitol Steps

Connecticut’s capitol is at the heart of major fords. Congrats to Will, UConn Law School grad, moving on to Greener Skies. Colby will soon be creating huskie compositions at Storrs. mAdBen’s commute from 11th Ave will often extend to a landmark headquarters in the insurance hub. Steps away from Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe abodes, Max’s Downtown gets a recent NYTimes restaurant nod. JeanJean&Co. rave about la cucina Italiana at Treva in West Hartford. Charter Oaks to all.

Mama Día

April Summer. Soggy May. Supposed to be a sunny Mother’s Day. Once a year we celebrate Moms. Like Valentine’s Day. Don’t get why there’s one day a year that obligates spouses and children to recognize us for stuff we love doing anyway.

Author Jay McInerney has a new book out about wine, A Hedonist in the Cellar. He was reminiscing about ordering his first bottle as a young man. A lovely 70’s staple, Mateus Rosé impressed his date at The Log Cabin restaurant ‘in Lenox’. Everything West of Boston seems to conflate. It was/is in Holyoke, Jay. An hour away. Jay once dated Lisa Druck aka Rielle Hunter. Wonder if she was that date?

Four O’Clock Rock

Every afternoon at 4:00, after school, we’d go over to cousin Terri’s house. She and her friend Florida would have American Bandstand in black and white on the tube. They were cool teenagers who taught us kids the latest dances. The Pony. Wah-oh wah-tusi. Mashed Potatoes. They’d worry if Carmen wasn’t dancing with Dino that day. Did they break up? Philly teens of every color twisted together across the floor. The first reality television. Singers and the beat of the music mere background to the drama of the ‘regulars’ every afternoon.

Dick Clark created a world where color disappeared as Frankie Avalon and Freddie Cannon shared the stage with Little Richard and Little Eva. Final salute. Good show.

Hair Die

Several recent articles about young people suffering from reaction to hair dye. Caught my eye. Upon further research, found a few more stories about women in comas and even dying from the same symptoms that scared me into a two-year anxiety attack. After 25+ years of covering my gray, one day I ballooned up like Harry Potter’s Aunt. Quick antihistamines and Dr.Husband saved me.

You don’t read about these cases in the U.S. media. Hmmm. Wonder why?! Most articles are in UK publications, where the level of PPD allowed is much less. It’s the chemical that adheres colorant to hair follicles in all products and absorbs into scalp. Yikes. Now hair straightening products have deadly chemicals, too. Somebody needs to sound the alarm. Ring Ring Ring.

So… 2012. Sarah will beat Katie in the ratings. Lame stream media loses either way. Cheeleaders, murders. But, hey I’m watching. Sad. Valerie Jarrett and the current Obama team needs to be replaced. Speaking of weak. Oh no! Now Beverly Hills housewives, desperation on GMA. Done. Back to Mika & Joe.

Kentucky beats Kansas. Yawwwn. Got my pink hat out. Will IBM’s CEO Ginni Rometty wear a green jacket? I say not. Can’t wait for the Masters and the return of Spring weather. A little iced English breakfast tea, please. recipedetours.com

Waldorf Salad

Should have kept our Apple stock. Dr.Husband got his iPad3. Between that and Siri, I’m a couple manzanas short. An apple a day keeps… you get the point.

Congrats to GemQueen on being honored at the Waldorf in New York on Friday for her work at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. No one is more deserving of Astorical accolades. Eileen Gould’s Bridges newsletter and popular new Art Expressions program for cancer survivors and their families, highlight her stellar contributions. A-Man and MazeHome were there to cheer her on.
