Tea Trekkers

32,000 Side Trekkers. Reading ‘tea leaves’ theme of the week. “When will things get back to normal?” MadMan Roger’s plaintive query. 1966.

So… 2012. Sarah will beat Katie in the ratings. Lame stream media loses either way. Cheeleaders, murders. But, hey I’m watching. Sad. Valerie Jarrett and the current Obama team needs to be replaced. Speaking of weak. Oh no! Now Beverly Hills housewives, desperation on GMA. Done. Back to Mika & Joe.

Kentucky beats Kansas. Yawwwn. Got my pink hat out. Will IBM’s CEO Ginni Rometty wear a green jacket? I say not. Can’t wait for the Masters and the return of Spring weather. A little iced English breakfast tea, please. recipedetours.com

Paris v. NYC

Nifty gift from mAdBen. He met graphic artist Vahram Muratyan and got me a signed copy of his new book, “Paris Versus New York: A Tally of Two Cities”. It is a clever delightful artistic comparison of la vie quotidienne, daily life in each city. Laugh-out-loud brilliant fun. Motivation to get back to gay Paree.

It was highlighted this weekend in the NYTimes along with a book about women on Madison Avenue during MadMen days. Jane Maas recounts her time at Ogilvy & Mather in the 60’s, in “MadWomen”.  A real-life portrait of Peggy Olson.

Before we leap tomorrow, let’s wish a very happy 87th to Betsey! If her mother Birdie could have only waited one more day, she’d still be in her twenties.

Bon Hiver

Yes, a happy winter for those of us who value lack of shoveling over skiing. So, will our snow storms be limited to Halloween and April Fool’s Day? We’ll see.

Justin Timberlake’s Bon Iver was so perfect as to be unrecognizable. BronxBeat re-heat. SNL good lately. Preview of Season 5 MadMen, end of Downton. Matthew and Mary together. How long can that last. It’s a soap after all.

Social issues dominate the debate. That and the height of trees in Michigan. Advantage Democrats.

Back Roads Thoughts

First book review of 2012. The Cat’s Table by Michael Ondaatje. I don’t like cats and I didn’t like his novel, The English Patient, but… check out the Books page.

So far, my clicker’s not stuck on CBS in the morning. Charlie Rose, Newt Gingrich, Bob Schieffer, Bill Plante, lots of tired-looking old white guys at 7. Gayle King with Melissa Etheridge, Juliana Margulies pimping her CBS show at 8. Geez, what’s new or cool about this? Back to Mika and Morning Joe.

Downton Abbey returns under a somber hue during World War I, brutal yet true. The war’s impact on Britain’s daily life is poignantly portrayed at Downton. Compression of the classes begins at the expense of a lost generation of men.

MadMen again March 25. Too long.

2011

GOOD

mAdBen’s Crazy Great Year. NYU accolades. New view. Career

Mama & 3 bears in the yard

The Night Circus
Ocean House
, Watch Hill- 60

BAD

People on TV.  Cover your skin. Sleeves. Pleez.
Amy Winehouse. Sad

Stuffington Post 2011

25 lb. Vermont bird demolished, nary a slice left. Lots of eating and laughing accomplished. Minor dysfunctional family melt-downs. Everyone survived. I think. JeanJean chef de cuisine queen made it all happen. At CandyPants’ house.

mAdHad and mAdBen compared account management notes. Cuzins colluded and rebelled to mess up the place cards so they could sit together. Alicat wasn’t here so I had the neck and gizzard to myself. Church basement rentals returned. Thanksgiving for healthy Grandmama.

StuffingtonSaturday cuzins’ football game.

Bridge Sighs

True confessions. I will miss Reeege. I like Jon Huntsman. “Big Bang Theory” makes me laugh out loud. Mika is good when Joe’s not around. Turkey is boring. So are mashed potatoes. Family trumps bland food. Stuffington Prelude. mAdBen rising as MadMen stalled ’til March. Friends shine through.

EpicFalls. Down goes Frazier. I remember that thrilla in Manila, wow. Ciao Silvio, Euro rocked. JoePa ends on a sad Sandusky note. MJ insisted on bad medicine and got Dr. Murray. Cain calls Pelosi a princess, jokes about Anita Hill. Perry’s latest ‘gaugh’, U.S. should impose sanctions on Iran. Duh. Done so since Carter administration. Oops. Tiger simmers, but loses steam in Sydney.

Heir Loom

Happy Birthday bro’ Joe. Personification of loyalty and class. Sports maven with sass. Next rhyme too obvious. Trousers tailor heir. 3 sons’ Dad beyond compare.

On a cool sunny September Sunday, it’s time to make Indian chicken. Not as good as Joey3Sticks’ “Coogan”, maybe better. It’s my twist on an old Burmese recipe using late summer heirloom tomatoes and hot peppers from the farmstand. Check it out at Recipe Detours. Pats at 4.

Ben ran into Jonathan Groff at brunch, then went to see Ethel Merman, I mean Bernadette Peters in Follies. Tickets were free. What is a proprietary eponym?

mAdBen

Just four blocks down the street, mAdBen off to meet the new MadMen Associates at Ogilvy & Mather’s Chocolate Factory. Sweet. Maybe too much like “Sterling Cooper”. This year’s graduation featured a pyramid of martini glasses. Oh boy. Stay away from Joan and Peggy. Do I smell a CLIO by end of the week?

U.S. Open highlights. Aussie Samantha Stosur, I’m a new fan! Composure, determination, class. And she doesn’t grunt. Tonight Djok v. La Reina, my name for la Rafa Nadal. Tea Party debate. Oh yeah, Pats play Miami.

Time Spans

Ten years ago my main concern was finding my sister Cindy who worked at World Trade #7. Finally found her in mid-town thank goodness and told her to get to Alicat and Joey3. Then it was time for Ben to come home from middle school. He wouldn’t fly out to friend’s bat mitzvah that October, didn’t want me to fly either. Life did change that day.

Life changes for lots of people every day. Fall edition of Bridges is a good one with some funny poignant stories of surviving cancer. It’s amazing how self-absorbed people are. One woman told her friend about her diagnosis, pain. Friend was upset because it ruined her day! Happens a lot I’m sure.

Transition day. New career, back to work, school. For some. Yay.
