Speaking of elections on all souls’ day, we aren’t finished with witches and goblins yet. Have to vote and cover my eyes when the returns come in tonite. I predict dia de los muertos for the democraticos. Say Hey Giants! First World Series win ever in SanFran. Too bad they were not there. Walter sent down dust.

Boo you, Aunt CrankyPants. I like Halloween even though I can’t eat cheap candy yet. My father clearly doesn’t see that I’m about to burn my finger, how can I make my stock trades? My brother Chris shot a 77 yesterday, 18 holes. That would be your average for 9. Hope kids come to your door in droves dragging pimped out pets. At least Uncle G will give them a KitKat. Skippy Hallow 1

The Legend of Skippy Hallow. Hate Halloween. Hate Pumpkins. Even as a kid. Even as the mother of a cute kid who loved spooking up the place. Webs, ghosts, skeletons. Couldn’t wait to take it all down. I do miss driving up Route 5 to pick out pumpkins with Ben. He could carve a scary face. After that squash ’em into the compost bin before they rot and squirrels strew them all over the yard. Yuk.

Ugly plastic black and orange stuff everywhere. OK, kids can dress up. Under 12! Older than that it’s pranky or creepy. Stupid adult costumes, excuse for women to slut it up and men to be boyish. We do that on Wednesdays. Am I cranky on the subject? Maybe it’s because I AM a witch. Oh yeah and the cheap candy sucks too. Don’t get me started on pimping up pets. When the pumpkins come out, I know dark afternoons and mornings are upon us, cold gray days. Leaves gone.

Let’s just skip Halloween and go straight to Thanksgiving. I like Thanksgiving.

Back in the day at Mount Holyoke, feminism was burgeoning, we were on the cusp of being dutiful daughters or Steinem surrogates. As one who never liked joining, I eschewed the tide and succeeded in the business world as an individual, not a representative of any group.

Segue to the state of feminism today. Be careful what you wish for. Who are the current feminists? Are Palin, O’Donnell, Bachmann, Whitman, Fiorina women? Are they working moms, independent thinkers, political activists? Are they part of our group because we are all women? What makes one woman more a woman than another? More a feminist? Would I want to join the group today? Hmmm.

Leaves On The Ground

Leaves on the ground, leaves on the ground, hat pushed sideways, leaves on the ground. Stalks on lampposts, leaves on the ground. Hunter’s moon, various squashes, gourds, Indian corn, and leaves on the ground.

Marking passages, PeterB, K9Queen, Grandma Dinny. PeterB, his new bride Anne and I met when we were 25, now we have kids that age.  K9Q and Dr.H were jointly surprized on 35th and 40th birthdays courtesy of gorgeous staging of leaves on Lafayette Park in SF 1988. Dinny sat next to me on Amtrak in 1994, we were hot cougars back then. Or not.

SuperJake decked out as mutated bumble bee for NJ soiree. Finally saw 30 Rock, laughed out loud, not the same as LOL, which is lame. It’s the season of political witches and warlocks. And leaves on the ground.

Mad Monday

LastMadCap of the season: Really? Don’s turn of heart shocking. He likes her with his kids more than the mature one who doesn’t like children. Plus mature one wants him to face his past, he’s opting to stay the course into the future. Didn’t see this coming. Betty more evil than ever. Peggy is the true creative genius, Joan’s gambit with pregnancy predictable. Can’t believe we have to wait a year for more. Staying in period costume, I’ll put on my pearls and housedress now to honor June Cleaver RIP.

JoanB introduced us to Henning Mankell’s Kurt Wallander mysteries as an antidote for Stieg Larsson Salander withdrawal. I’m late to the game, but just discovered Kenneth Branaugh as Wallander rebroadcast from BBC on PBS. Watched one episode and it recalls the grit and mood of Stieg’s Sweden as well as its architecture and culture. Dark, bloody in spots, but good.

JeanJean reports Universal in Orlando no walk on Pebble Beach. Flip flopped back and forth between Giants, Pats. Rooting for one, and against the other as always. Both won, so split the cheer. Branch looked good for the Pats, dang nab it. Exciting games and brewskis galore. Yanks now tied 1-1.

21 years ago yesterday we were rockin and rollin in SanFran, Seth Thomas clock on the shelf still stuck at 5:04 p.m.

Cool Guyz

I like guyz in general. Some are cooler than others. On my cool guy list this week: John Slattery, I’d get in the passenger seat of his Lincoln any day; love Willie Geist on anything, he’s smart and funny, zany in a sane way; Russell Brand, ditto, in an insane way; los mineros de Chile; bloggers Jake-o-Lantern and his wacky Dad. Of course every week Jack. My Jack. Yes, boring as it is, he read my comment on the air yet again. I wrote about another cool guy, read it here.-Question: How will our children’s lives compare to ours?

The whole O’Reilly dust up on the View looked like a put-up PR stunt to me. I didn’t see it but since Julie Chen’s new show starts Monday, I’m just sayin. Oprah is taking Jon Stewart’s audience to the Sanity Rally. Oh yeah, he’s a really cool guy. Did I mention Jon Hamm? He was hilarious on live 30 Rock. Oh, that reminds me of Alec Baldwin.

Weekend Treks – Imagine

John Lennon was my Beatle. We all had our own. Missy liked Paul, or was it George. Cindy Erb played Ringo. But, mine was always John. He was dark, moody, poetic, even in 1964 when I was 14. My father was freaked out when the family sat in front of the telly on that Sunday night watching Ed Sullivan’s Show. I screamed like no silly ‘tween has done since, even for a Jonas Bro. It was orgasmic in an innocent way. If that’s possible, but it was. Camelot had just been shattered by bullets; soon after that, MLK and RFK were gunned down, and finally John. We went through a hellish violence in our childhoods, decades of turbulent times. Love is all you need and no more war. Vietnam, not Iraq or Afghanistan. Have we learned anything. No. Gathering at Strawberry Fields in Central Park tomorrow, John’s would-be 70th birthday, hard to believe.

Cup Caked

Why the cup cake fad? Hate cake, in cups, frosting, doo-dads on top. Don’t get cup cakes. Magnolia Bakery cup cakes, neither. Hope Cynster had good bday camping in the Adirondacks yesterday, warmer and dryer than here. Hope no cup cakes. JeanJean will be teaching sex, drugs, rock & roll at middle school this fall. Maybe she can make cup cakes with her class.

Speaking of cup cakes, stumbled upon Hummus recipe. Had can of chick peas sitting in cupboard. Took out the blender and added Drew’s Lemon Goddess dressing (like quarter cuppish), hot pepper flakes, a little more lemon juice. Blended it all to a semi-dense dip substance, not too thick. Good, but wouldn’t use it in cup cakes. You could.

It’s a mad world on MadMen these days. Betty is getting more evil. Is she revealing an incestuous past? Did she allow Sally to get too close to her Dad, Sally’s grandfather? Meanwhile, Joan and Peggy are running the show in the AdWorld. Don’s still dating Bethany, the Mount Holyoke “gymnast”. Pete Campbell went to Deerfield, someone on the show must be from ’round here.
