Steps away from Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe abodes, Max’s Downtown gets a recent NYTimes restaurant nod. JeanJean&Co. rave about la cucina Italiana at Treva in West Hartford. Charter Oaks to all.
Several recent articles about young people suffering from reaction to hair dye. Caught my eye. Upon further research, found a few more stories about women in comas and even dying from the same symptoms that scared me into a two-year anxiety attack. After 25+ years of covering my gray, one day I ballooned up like Harry Potter’s Aunt. Quick antihistamines and Dr.Husband saved me.
You don’t read about these cases in the U.S. media. Hmmm. Wonder why?! Most articles are in UK publications, where the level of PPD allowed is much less. It’s the chemical that adheres colorant to hair follicles in all products and absorbs into scalp. Yikes. Now hair straightening products have deadly chemicals, too. Somebody needs to sound the alarm. Ring Ring Ring.
Should have kept our Apple stock. Dr.Husband got his iPad3. Between that and Siri, I’m a couple manzanas short. An apple a day keeps… you get the point.
Congrats to GemQueen on being honored at the Waldorf in New York on Friday for her work at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. No one is more deserving of Astorical accolades. Eileen Gould’s Bridges newsletter and popular new Art Expressions program for cancer survivors and their families, highlight her stellar contributions. A-Man and MazeHome were there to cheer her on.

Doctors as gods. Maureen Dowd tackles this topic today. With the abundance of internet info now, much of it faux, patients have become emboldened to question and contradict physicians’ diagnoses and treatment. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. Many people demand every new test, scan, drug, because they’ve read about it and they can. Unless they have to pay out of their own pockets. Then, not so much. With the advent of ObamaCare, less will be covered. Tug-of-war alert.
Speaking of false gods. What’s with the deification of Chris Christie? He’s Irish and Italian. check. He’s fat. check. He’s a family man. check. But, is he really the GOP’s elixir? Once the Tea Bags hear all of his views, he’ll become Dr.Devil.

Local hero- Dr. Ian Goodman went from Springfield, MA to Haiti last week to rescue severely injured children. He was able to bring eight of those who could be most helped back to Massachusetts. A former pediatric resident, Ian is currently an ER fellow at the Baystate Medical Children’s Hospital (Tufts University) in Springfield. His story is inspirational.
The Moth, is a story telling organization. It was founded in 1997 by George Dawes Green, poet and novelist from Georgia, to recreate summer evening porch stories, told by everyday folks. Now a New York City institution, you can hear the famous and not-famous recount their personal tales. It could be replicated in any local community’s school, senior center, theater group.
