Addled Reads

Addie. Ada. Adelaide. Women-y novels. Not my fave.

The Boston Girl, by Anita Diamant. Syrupy story about a Jewish family pre-WWI in Boston. The smart, cute daughter of three, Addie Baum’s luck was incredible as she escaped the critical eye and neglect of her financially struggling immigrant parents to be welcomed into a high class world with summer trips to Rockport. What?  Yiddish terms seemed forced with a smattering of contextual history. Very light read indeed. **

The Magician’s Lie, by Greer Macallister. Reminiscent of World of Wonders. Turn of the century in America. It’s about Ada, who becomes Arden a female magician, protégée of the first, Adelaide. Boyfriend manager far-fetched. No character came to life except for Ray who was stalker evil. If someone wants to do you harm, the only way to escape is through magic or murder. Ending hard to swallow, like a bad fire-eater. A pretty good escape on a snowy weekend. ***

White Shout!

Juno. No. Not Juneau, Alaska. Not the cute movie, either. The monster blizzard of 2015. Worst storm in history! DeBlasio had to have a talk with his son Dante about the overwhelming whiteness that is about to overtake New York City. Where is Al Sharpton? Mega plows will not be able to keep up with this beast of wind and snow. Weathermen bundled up in parking lots showing us flakes. It’s great. Until you can’t see them anymore because of the whiteout. Or, the power’s out. Stuck in our icy ugh-loos. Eating peanut butter and jelly by candlelight.

Yeah. Can’t wait.

Je Suis Candide

Charlie Hebdo Magazine killings in Paris. Lamenting those who carried the enlightened torch of Voltaire. Satire. Free speech. Pens drawn against guns of disaffected disillusioned men disguised in the guise of religion. Boredom begets indoctrination in absurdities as a rationale to commit atrocities. Another BrothersTsarnaev scenario. As Pope Francis says, jobs will obliterate these faux jihads. Economics drives our new Gang World.

On a more mundane note. 20 years since Starbucks served its first Frappuccino.

Back to Future II

2015 the “future” when movie came out in 1989. It’s here. Constellations clear.

New York Eve

New Year’s Weekend Eve. Bar Boulud. So good. Telepan. Pretty bland. Dovetail serene. Too much bread, wine and cheese in between.

Constellations. Choice. Chance. Life. Death. Infinity. Balloons. Strings. Theoretical astrophysics. Bees. Jake Gyllenhaal. Ruth Wilson. New play in previews on Broadway. Thought-provoking show. Genius concept. Staccato scenes. Masterclass acting. Stellar directing. Gazing up from the front row.
