So New?

Not much. Fresh TV content is mostly done. Daytime. Primetime. Even Jeopardy! Until productions go back into operation, it’s all re-runs all the time. Okay. One good newish series. Unorthodox. A slice of life in a fringe Jewish cult with a great performance by an elfin powerhouse.

Biden. An old pol denying culturally-accepted behavior in the old timey days. Nothing new there. #MeToo oozing hypocrisy. New blood. Please.

Even ordered a long-lauded book. Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. Never appealed. Yet. Was running out of options. So glad I did. One of the best reads in years.

A New York Restaurant Story

Gabrielle Hamilton owns an acclaimed East Village restaurant called Prune. It’s a small 15-table closely seated cozy boĆ®te. As Hamilton herself recognized, it was becoming an anachronism in the new dining scene of brands rather than personalities, even before the coronavirus crisis.

Her NYTimes piece about the struggle to figure out what to do in this strange new environment is a poignant, poetic homage to the heart & soul of her 20-year James Beard– winning labor of love. It is a metaphor for so much now that it elicits a tear. One of the best reads of the year.

She began her torturous dilemma during the first warnings of an emerging pandemic “after 10 days of being waterboarded by the news”. What to do? An absurdiste lament, “That we are still a thread in the fabric that might unravel if you yanked us from the weave”.

The best quote is about how the industry has changed over the years, “The Brunch. The Brunch. The purebred lap dogs now passed off as service animals to calm anxieties that might arise from eating eggs Benedict on a Sunday afternoon”.

– Hamilton’s memoir Blood, Bones & Butter one of my faves. She is also featured in my old Northampton anthology Table’s Edge.

Agoraphobia Should Be A Choice

As an agoraphobe for the past too many years, shopping or going to a busy restaurant or for a walk in the Park takes some courage. Yet. There was the glimmer of having a choice. Now that seclusion is mandatory, it seems silly to feel trapped. And. The scared shitless diet is no fun either.

Fiona Apple’s Fetch the Bolt Cutters – along the same theme.

Carol’s Carrel

mAd Ben’s friend lives nearby and is a voracious reader. We trade book ideas. So. Yesterday I decided to inventory what’s currently on my shelves to lend her a few. It took much of the day. Which was great.

Click here if you want to see what’s on the UWS Stacks. Yes. That’s right. I alphabetized them by author.

Also recalled NYC and past Book Clubs and what we read. A perfect day. Any ideas for the next 28? +

Crucial Mindless-Ness

Another month of social distancing? Too much to deal with. Stationary bike and weights. Good. The scared shitless diet is also working. And. It is crucial to tune out the news. So.

Final season of POP TV’s Schitt’s Creek so sweet. Will miss it.

Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None on BBC 1 is kinda dumb but fun. Charles Dance is always worth a watch.

The Inn at Little Washington on PBS is a great diversionary story about a quirky chef going for his third Michelin star.

HomelandĀ  would have been ripped from the headlines a few weeks ago. Now Afghanistan and Pakistan seem so quaint.

American IdolĀ  singer/performer Just Sam aka Samantha Diaz is really a fabulous UWS story (even though they say she’s from Harlem cuz it sounds more hardscrabble). She slayed Selena last night.

So far we are the only people not watching Tiger King. There you go. Getting through another day.

Place Card

Sheltering in place. Day 10?

NY Gov Andrew Cuomo pre-empts The View. Which is fine. He is a leader and should run for President. Joe Dotard should step aside.

NJ Governor is a jerk and cuts into The Young & The Restless. My renewed few days on stationary bike have therefore withered away. Maybe today.

Celeste Ng’s novel has been made into a series on Hulu. It is great. Little Fires Everywhere. Kerry Washington is fabulous as is the whole cast.

Sappy & soppy but a feel-good diversion. American Idol. Where auditions and heart-break are still normal somewhere.Ā  Ā Just Sam!

Reading to the Rescue

Although NYC Book Club was postponed this week, still intend to read the pick Dear Edward,Ā by Ann Napolitano.

But. That’s after I finish Mantel’s last Thomas Cromwell in her trilogy, which could take quite a while. On page 200, 500+ to go. So far it is rich, dense and captivating. Thanks, Hilary!

A lighter and shorter diversion is Bret Stephens’ portrait of his avant-garde artist grandmother in today’s NYTimes. Whatta woman! Mexico with Trotsky & Rivera just for starters.

Conjured recent novel by Isabel Allende, A Long Petal of the Sea. Her familial perspective of the Spanish Civil War and later migration to Chile. Political and historical context made it a worthwhile read.

Coronavirus Chronicles Vol. I

2 weeks ago:

Had birthday dinner at Gramercy Tavern. Now closed. Sat outside on a clear warm sunny day sipping Sauvignon Blanc at Tavern on the Green courtyard bar. Now closed.

A week ago:

Dr. Husband shopped as usual at Citarella. Aisles too narrow to go there now. Pioneer is better. And. Fresh Direct delivered with 2 days notice. Now windows are at least 10 days out.

Yesterday:

Next-door neighbor who is never home because she travels the world for work had a Peloton delivered. Luis our Doorman who usually gives me a hug was sitting behind the desk wearing a mask. I sprayed an Amazon box with Windex all-purpose cleaner before opening.

Today:

April baby shower for nephew/niece canceled. Positive reviews and calls for NY Gov Andrew Cuomo to run for President 2024. Maybe sooner?
