Parade Views 2017

Finally! The parade.

From our bedroom perch at 7am we heard buses. A marching band from Houston Texas alighted with brass & drums.

Then at 9am the parade begins.
Lucky to have a warm vantage.

Jimmy Fallon gives this year’s parade a “thumbs up”.

City Life

Another evening on Central Park West. Commuters walking by. Bicycles too. No matter that above the trees fireworks booming and flashing. We went to the corner to watch. People looked at us rather than the show in the sky. Yes. That’s everyday life in the City.

Oh and. There was that marathon. Runners came out of the Park donning their hard-earned blue ponchos with a sense of pride and accomplishment. But. Not many fans were around to cheer. Rainy day damper. Congrats nonetheless. They were finishing well into the night.

Native New Yorker

Dr. Husband. Born in Brooklyn November 2. Raised in Great Neck. Colleged at Columbia. Taught medicine in East Harlem. Lived in the West Village. Left in 1982. Back again.

In a New York state of mind.

Sightings…

Looked out the window last Friday. As “Gladys” does. And who do I see? Steven Spielberg & Kate Capshaw walking their dog across the street. They have a flat in the San Remo. Beats looking at Mrs. Dork in her purple bathrobe next door in Flo.

Then today on our usual Central Park rotation, came upon a filming crew. For YOU. An upcoming thriller for Lifetime. Shay Mitchell is in the chair getting makeup done to look like she’s been hit on the head with a rock. She of Pretty Little Liars fame. Apparently.

Bronx Tale

Jonas Bronck, a Dutch settler for whom New York City’s northern borough is named. Home of Arthur Avenue, a Zoo and of course the “Bronx Bombers”.  Ironic that the iconic New York Yankees’ dramatic series comeback was capped off by Didi Gregorius, born in Amsterdam. Of the chivalrous order of Oranje. His two homers sealed the deal to win the Division title. A rare baseball import from Holland playing for New Netherland’s most famous team.

The Yankees, derived from the male name Janke, what Dutch-speaking Americans were called back in the day. Go Didi. Go Jankes!

Autumnal Uptown Funk

It’s Fall. Happened at 4:02 pm. Leaves starting to yellow a bit. Autumnal sounds reverberating through our windows. Must be Global Citizen Festival. Rehearsing for the annual event. Free and easy to head over to see and hear before the crowds pack the Park tomorrow. They don’t know the world is going to end. Sing on!

Meanwhile over at Madison Square Garden, Joey Three Sticks is catching Bruno Mars. Uptown funk you up. Uptown funk you up.

Deuces Wild

Wild storm. Hurricane Irma dodging around Florida defying predictions. Covering the entire peninsula. Relentless. Tenacious. Meanwhile. NFL season has begun. Wobbling on whether or not to keep watching. Patriots game was riddled with injury interruptions. Half of Sunday’s pregames are dedicated to who will be benched for various broken bones, torn muscles, not to mention concussions. It has gotten close to criminal.

Speaking of risks. New York in the ’70’s. Garth Risk Hallberg’s novel City on Fire makes a fair attempt at shining a light on the dark corners of that era in the City. Tonight, HBO’s The Deuce will focus on the porn industry when Times Square was a combat zone.
