Rear view mirror. Back to the future. What if Bill Clinton’s accusers in Arkansas were believed as Roy Moore’s are in Alabama? The Atlantic ponders that thought. Dan Rather to Don Imus at the time regarding Juanita Broderick’s claim of rape which she contemporaneously reported to people, “That was a long time ago. People want to move forward.” Many such dismissals of Kathleen Willey, Paula Jones. And then there was that very young intern Monica Lewinsky.
The Washington Post did an investigative report on these cases, but was ignored by the Democrats and the media at large. In today’s New York Times, Michelle Goldberg’s column “I Believe Juanita.” So. Is it a culture thing? Should all women be believed? Have times changed?
So. Days on end of swirling hurricane maps. Even through commercial breaks. Reporters straining against rain and wind. Again. For days on end. Natural disasters to be sure. Live shots of flooded streets and blown-away homes. Houston. Key West. San Juan. But. Where is the coverage of the California wild fires?
Is it just me or is this story relegated behind headlines of Donald & Harvey? No 24/7 coverage of true devastation, 30 dead, hundreds missing. Wineries. Vineyards. Businesses. Whole neighborhoods! Why not the same attention?
Today’s Washington Post story reads like an Ian Fleming spy novel. Replete with secret dossiers, clandestine situation room confabs, CIA envelopes for Obama’s eyes only. It’s a fascinating tale which if true makes the former President seem feckless in the face of an international incident perpetrated by Putin himself. Barack actually admitted telling Vlad to “Just stop that!” Wow. Sure that caused quakes in Blofeld’s mountaintop lair.
The bottom line remains. Actions and more importantly inactions were the result of underestimating Trump’s chances to win the election. And. Way overestimating Hillary’s certain landslide victory. A cascade of decisions fell from those miscalculations by the Obama White House, Clinton’s campaign, and a complicit press.
Mainstream media learned nothing from the last election. Still missing the mood of the country outside the beltway. Completely in denial that their polls and data were grossly inaccurate. Pushing Hillary’s dominance swayed the results more than Russian interference. Yet. That’s all they are focused on. Like dogs with a bone. Constant coverage of Trump campaign’s potential collusion with Putin. Once again they are living in the Northeast elitist bubble. Thinking that the rest of the country is similarly outraged. They are not.
Economy. Jobs. Infrastructure. Healthcare. Terrorism. They still care about things like that.
FBI-Ex Director Jim Comey thought Hillary was going to win. So revealed Anthony Weiner’s server investigation to save his skin. Just covering his ass. But. Hillary did not win. And Comey’s now potentially complicit in a Trump presidency.
How does Jimmy Comey right that wrong? He needs to take Donny Trump down. It becomes too easy. Donny keeps calling Jimmy. Jimmy could say no no I can’t take the call. No no I won’t have dinner with you. Instead he says yes. Keeps Donny talking. Then writes everything down. Laying the trap for obstruction of justice. Devious.

Now CNN vill never shut up.
Masking. Unmasking. It’s a dangerous dance. A waltz of so-called classified leaks on both sides of the floor. CNN’s national security guy Jim Sciutto worked in Obama’s White House. His former ABC colleague was none other than Susan Rice’s husband. Hmm. Wonder where Sciutto gets his “inside info” on alleged Russia connections. It’s a CNN obsession.
Meanwhile. Korea. Syria. China.
Watergate was then. In retrospect not that great. Of a scandal. But. Everything now is constant press overreach. Russia-gate. Comey-gate. Server-gate. Benghazi-gate. News-cycle silly-gates galore. Woodward & Bernstein sit on panels recalling glory days of yore. Investigative reporters straining to break the next bombshell. Exaggerate non-stories hoping one will stick. Sad!
Media elite retreat? As tweets beat the press a new era emerges. The good news may be that those cozy with the Washington ruling class no longer hold sway. Incestuous relationships formerly affording access and creating bias will be broken up. Hope so. Maybe reporting will return to what it was meant to do. Objective investigative work with no political agenda. It could be a better journalistic environment serving the general public.
