Tattered Pants of the Sisterhood

Harvard wants its sororities to be gender-neutral. Everyone welcome. Oxymoron alert! Sorority means sisterhood. Fraternity brotherhood. That’s for starters. Definitions be damned. These exclusionary clubs were founded to do just that. Keep certain people out! Catholics. Jews. Non-jocks. Ugly people. Poor people. So yeah. And. How can you have mixers now? Plus. Aren’t college campuses supposed to provide segregated safe spaces for Snow Flakes?

Sororities used to be bastions of non-micro aggressed against pretty blonde cheerleaders. What’s next? Sad Glee Clubs?

Competing Chyrons

As the EU Head and Trump addressed the White House Press today, these chyrons appeared on the bottom of each cable news screen:

Trump Makes Surprise Statement as Pompeo Grilled on Russia – CNN

President Trump: The EU will Work toward Zero Tariffs – FOX

Trump Speaks on Trade After Trump, Cohen Audio Surfaces – MSNBC

That’s the American Media today in a nutshell.

Dystopia & Disruption

Man Booker Long List announced. Dystopia and Disruption themes. Signs of the times to be sure. But. I want to escape all that. Won’t be reading The Mars Room by Rachel Kushner. Clausty on steroids. Not sure about the others on the list. Seems a dark collection.

It’s clearly a good year for Canada’s Michael Ondaatje. His 1992 The English Patient won the Man Booker Golden Prize for the best novel in the past five decades. Just read his latest, Warlight which made this year’s list. A post-World War II story, which was good, but didn’t love it as much as one of my all time faves, The Cat’s Table.

Gale Storm

Howling rain. A Summer Nor’Easter hitting NYC. Lashing the dormant air conditioner as cool fresh air wafts in through narrowly cracked windows. Only people to be seen outside along Central Park West tonight are hunched over with inside-out umbrellas.

Gusts may pick up at the British Open final on Scotland’s coast tomorrow. Looks to be survival of Carnoustie’s Caddy Shack. American millennial housemates. Little rat farts are dominating the links. Spieth. Kisner. Johnson. Fowler. Could a geezer ever break wind?

Gale Storm was a Fifties actress. No. Not Stormy Daniels. Gale played My Little Margie where she looked older than her father on an old timey tv show. She also later had her own eponymous sit-com. With Zazu Pitts. That’s correct.

Helsinki Discord

As Vlad’s World Cup comes to an end. Allons enfants de la patrie, le jour de gloire. Pour qui? A PR win for him. He enters the Helsinki Discord with an edge. Could there be a grand accord with the Middle East? Netanyahu & Abbas have met with Putin recently. Syria & Iran traded for Ukraine & Crimea? Or. Will it all result in a Trumpian Hell Stinky.

Meanwhile, hope London loans the baby Donald balloon to Macy’s for this year’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. It’a a natural addition.

First Troll

First Lady Melania uses fashion as her voice. The infamous jacket with I Don’t Care Do You the most overt example of her inclination to speak through clothing choices. Perhaps she longs to be a Tsarina as her husband admires autonomous regimes. The buttercup gown she wore to dinner in Oxfordshire was a J Mendel, established in 1870 St. Petersburg, Russia for the Romanovs. As they go to meet with Putin. Not an idle sartorial decision to be sure.

Today she played bowls in a striped Victoria Beckham. Never shy in her bespokeness. Funny.

Queens Rule

Ocasio-Cortez had a positive message. She did not focus on her gender or ethnicity nor did she dwell on hating Trump. But rather gave her attention to girls behind the bars and guys in the garbage trucks. Yup. That will win back working class votes. Well done. Even though. She’s an avowed Socialist. So. A blue county turns bluer. Doesn’t change the congressional landscape and moves the party further left. Works in Queens. Swing districts. Not so much.

Speaking of queens. Stephen Frears of The Queen directs the quirky cheeky A Very English Scandal on Amazon. Homosexuality in the Beatles-era. Based on the story of MP Jeremy Thorpe portrayed brilliantly by Hugh Grant. Excellent ensemble cast.

Bloomin’ Mike!

Michael Bloomberg reportedly putting the band back together for a 2020 run. NY Post today. Has he been reading my blog? Yes! Please run, Mike! A New York billionaire independent-minded businessman. He’s mulling joining the fray as a Democrat. Why not? He’s already investing $80 million to provide a counterbalance to the ineptitude of the Republicans in governing. Admittedly, it’d be hard to get a short Jewish almost-80-year-old elected. But. Biden and Bernie are pondering another plunge. So. Hey. He’s already gotten my vote. In 2016.

Fox & Friends

Emily Jane Fox & Friends. Hawking her new book, Born Trump. Hanging out with Maureen Dowd and other media glitterati and the Vanity Fair crowd at Ludlow House downtown. Ridiculing Ivanka as no longer an elite. That’s rich. Irony notwithstanding. Trashing Trumps is fun for the vain coastal cocktail contingent. But. Beware. In the end deplorable Fox & Friends viewers will outfox the Ivy League punditry again. With votes.

Melania Maelstrom

Melania creates a media cyclone. So easily. It’s funny. Where is she after her surgery? Countdown until she’s seen in public. Has she moved back to New York? Had a nervous breakdown? Facelift? Did she run away with Barron back to Slovenia? The conspiracy theories abound. And. Feminists who hold women’s voices as so valued are saying that she has no brain of her own. She is controlled by Trump. Her staff needs to tell her what to do. Really?

Then she wears a jacket with a cryptic message on the back. The press goes into a tailspin. As expected. Melania is just a terrific troll. Love it.
