Amity Shlaes on Morning Joe recalling many hours spent in Northampton’s Forbes Library researching her new book about former local resident, President Calvin Coolidge. Actress Jane Lynch gleefully gushing to Kelly & Michael about Smith College, where her wife graduated and she received an honorary doctorate, “It’s a training ground for lesbians!” Smith’s P.R. Dept. thrilled.

SOTU watchers remarked Obama’s make-up strangely sallow. He looked whiter than Boehner. Pale showing by Latino GOP. Rubio’s nervous response speech. Ted Cruz bullying senate committee, questioning Hagel’s patriotism.

Chuck ducked. After yesterday, Hagel should ditch DefenseSec job. Not only was his performance laconic, he sounded incompetent, and didn’t act like he even wants it. McCain, Graham, Cruz were rude and hostile, but Chuck was bad. Sad.

Les Enfants

Let’s try this again. Happy New Year. As re-elected Speaker Boehner cries his way into another stalemate, maybe he can pass a funding bill for hurricane Sandy victims. Les enfants terribles are still squabbling in the congressional sandbox. Same cast. Pelosi, McConnell, Reid, Boehner and their ornery obdurate brats.

Let’s focus on the positive. Adelaide Parker’s star was born over the year’s turn. Congrats to PithyV & Co. And, a special thanks to JeanJean the rescue queen. All’s well that ends well.

Comity Cliff

Déjà vu all over again. Ground hog day. Take your pick. Here we go, again. Over the cliff. No comity on the horizon. Just bad jokes as the tragi-comedy for the economy unfolds. Then another debt ceiling comedy show in a couple of weeks.

So, enjoy the New Year, a fresh foot of snow. Football. Movies on-demand. Surprisingly, I didn’t hate Ted . It had some tender moments. And The Guard, set in Ireland was good. Bought season 1 of Homeland for a marathon into 2013.

Divine Comity

Deus ex machina our only hope? Divine intervention to create some semblance of comity in congress. So far, just comedy of errors. If Jon Stewart and Bill O’Reilly can coexist, there must be a god out there somewhere. January pay checks will not be funny. Even Tea Partiers won’t be laughing. Game, set, match. Fiscal cliff. Obama tax bill. Hahahahaha. Comity Central coming soon.

Last Ballot

70% of Americans said this was one of the most important elections ever. Jack Cafferty asked why? He read what I said, “The country has passed its tipping point. Both parties need to grapple with how to balance an aging and diverse population’s needs without going completely broke. If civility doesn’t replace sniping, the Mayans may have been onto something.”

Kudos to Axelrod, Messina, Plouffe. Brilliant tactical campaign. Let’s hope Obama picks just as strong a White House advisory team and Cabinet to lead us through the tough challenges of the next four years. Exhale. Bon Weekend.

College Finals

Finals underway at Electoral College. 270 needed to pass. More for a mandate. Ultimate test. What will swing states do? If Dr.Husband’s thesis comes true, we may be in for lots of make-up exams. Contested horrors graded by lawyers. No. Hand in ‘blue’ books early so they can be marked quickly and we will know!
