Eighteen years ago. From 83rd & Columbus and all over the City. First responders went in.
Monday Grind
Rafa Nadal brilliantly battled out a 5-set grunting grind against Russia’s relentless Steely Dan Medvedev. A match for the ages.
U.S. Open has a new Queen. Romanian Canadian Anrdreescu. Serena slayer. Prez Trudeau sent congrats. While Meghan ditched her royal duties for a friend. Fashion week should rethink purple rain. Anna.
Logan Roy quotes Shakespeare to Cherry Jones. “Just Take the Money”. The kids are not all right. Marcia goes rogue. Cousin Gregory rising.
Mark Sanford announces he’ll run against Trump for the Republican nom. He’ll focus on ethics and honesty in the party? That’s rich. Biden couldn’t muster a crowd at New Hampshire’s Dem convention. While Warren’s appearance filled a rowdy arena. Iowa & New Hampshire don’t seem to be going Joe’s way. But. Hey. There’s always Delaware.
For a belly laugh. Conan Without Borders in Greenland. Hilarious. Also his trip with sidekick to Italy and Japan. Bourdain-esque with lots of funny. ABC’s Sunday Rahm & Christie show continues to entertain.
Yankees won. Giants lost. Niners won. Pats. Duh. As NFL’s contracts get fatter, injured list gets longer. Good Luck!
Toxic Feminism
Trigger warning. Bill Maher had an enlightening discussion with Christina Hoff Sommers on Real Time. She’s written that feminism has become a toxic brew of misandry and women’s self-victimization as cowering snowflakes afraid to be in mixed society.
#MeToo’s backlash an offshoot of such thinking. It is rare that Sommers can speak on college campuses any more. As a contemporary from the ’70’s, we were part of a wave of feminists who wanted equality. That has morphed into a crazy man-hating cult.
Talking to Your kid
The most remarkable thing I noticed at the U.S. Open. Besides Nadal’s OCD ticks. Or Serena’s fashion felonies. A mother talking to her son in the stands. Neither of them had a screen in front of them. They were actually having a conversation. That it was noteworthy. Sad.
Market Forces
Gun control? Minimum wage? Solar power? If people want it. Markets will react. Walmart no longer selling certain guns & ammunition. Companies raising their own minimum wages. Home-building industry choosing photovoltaic panels for its customers to save money.
And. Maybe the people will choose the next Dem nominee. Rather than the media or the DNC. Right? Elizabeth?
Lobster Day Weekend
End of summer traditions. Steamers & lobster & corn-on-the-cob. Just a Metro North train away. Fabulous backyard clam bake.
On Center Court. Osaka showed heart & class. If not game in the end. #McCoco doubles team regained youthful glee. Djok choked. And. Sorry Serena. But. That outfit was just purple rain.
Over at HBO. Logan coddles a fragile Kendall. Roman goes to management training. Shiv shakes her head as Holly & Cherry join the fray. But hey. Always intriguing new acquisitions at RoyCo.
‘Twas a bon weekend.
Tennis Anyone?
Loved playing tennis with Dad. Happy Bday, by the way. He’d have a stogie perched between his teeth as he lobbed and dunked shots. Using either hand. He often beat so-called classic players. Kinda like Bobby Riggs. Dad called me the Evergreen, because I never moved. Well.
Loved watching Tennis when it was Johnny Mac & Jimmy, Ivan & Boris, Martina & Chrissie. Then lost interest. Life got hectic.
Now I’m back. This year’s U.S. Open. Less grunting and screeching. Chrissie, Johnny & Pat Mac commentating. Depth and insight even if a bit snippy. But. It’s the charismatic, brilliantly poised fifteen-year old. Call her Coco. Gauff. She’s great for the sport. And. ESPN.
Random question. Why are all the coaches men?
Time for TNN
Fox News Channel isn’t working for Trump anymore. Time for TNN!
Bring back the old timey crowd. Piers Morgan. Larry King. Geraldo Rivera. Regis Philbin. Bill Shine. Bill O’Reilly. Greta van Susteren. Howie Carr. Pilfer the loyal foxes. Sean Hannity. Jesse Watters. Jeanine Pirro. Laura Ingraham. Corral some former Apprentices. John Rich. Snoop Dog. Gary Busey. Bill Rancic. And oh for good measure. Just forgive Omarosa. She’s ratings gold. Throw in both Huckabees.
Managing Executives. Mark Burnett. Kanye West. And. Bill Barr.
Succession
Logan Roy pits his kids against each other in a fratricidal competition, akin to Soapatriarch Victor Newman. In that other reality show, Trump sets up his spawn to vie for the family business with a nod to have the next G-7 at their Doral Resort in that swing state of Florida.
Over in Democrat land. Elizabeth Warren is drawing huge crowds. It could be a bloody fight with Sleepy Joe for the nomination. Uglier than a Kendall-Roman wrestling match where each ends up Shivved.
A rough & tumble Fall. For some of us. That’ll be fun.
First ObamaFlick Scores
If American Factory is any indication of Barack & Michelle’s talent for choosing great content, then they could have their own Network.
This first choice is a documentary about a Chinese glass company that takes over a moth-balled auto factory in Dayton, Ohio. The stories of both Americans who want to welcome the company for its jobs and the Chinese management and workers who come with it is astoundingly intimate. Access is based on trust of the local filmmakers through the ups and downs of a foreign entity taking over a community workplace.
A willingness to bond with each other’s cultures turns to a clash. Resolution is never complete nor easy. This is a must-see brilliant view of life in middle America and working-class China. Global realities. Bravo.
