Defending Jacob, by William Landay is a mystery that gut-wrenchingly explores nature vs. nurture. It portrays a horrific family crisis that turns blithe normalcy into a twisted tempest of contempt, blame, guilt. A ‘happy’ 35-year marriage changes in a day. Regrets. Redemption? A compelling read.

While busy testing for Recipe Detours, I’m noticing different produce in the market. Searching for new ideas is fun. Finding purple potatoes at Atkins Farm, I plunked them into the basket. No clue what I’d do. After a little research, found out that they are native to Peru, so created my version of  PurplePeruStew.

Go green. Go Will. Greenskies. CandyPants says: Facebook has jumped the shark.

It’s the 50th anniversary of Craig Claiborne’s first restaurant review. A new biography casts the acerbic critic as a conflicted soul. Congrats to MichaelB, on becoming a ‘Philadelphia lawyer’. Competence characterizes the complimentary cliche. Anita will have to check out the new Barnes Art Collection when she’s off abuela- duty on her next visit.

RecipeDetours- Broccoli with Cheetos. It’s the specialty of the house at ParkAveWinter- NY. Don’t believe it? Here is the recipe in Saveur. If this surprises you, guess what? Most chefs don’t write the recipes in their own cookbooks, they have ghost-writers. And if that shocks you…

What’s with all the hubbub about the disgruntled Goldman guy?  In his New York Times Op-Ed, Greg Smith disses the culture at Goldman Sachs as he resigns. Me thinks his bonus was crappy. Or he didn’t get a promotion. There’s more to this story. Profits first? Always. Bonuses for outré products? Of course. Not newsworthy. Nor worthy of an op-ed in what was once a prestigious journal.

LenTastic

No. Not Lin. Enough about him. Lent. Mardi Gras. Everyday gras. Have you looked around? Lenten repast tonight will include carmelized turnips- cover turnip chunks with water, add pepper, boil ’til water is gone, add butter and sauté to crispy dark brown. Sorry, mAdBen, strained Lentil soup for you.

Besides giving up watermelon seeds every Lent, my father sold lots of suits. Even if they didn’t fit. Customers just liked buying stuff from him. Seems his grandson Joe4Sticks has inherited the gift. Auburn Nissan has a new star salesman.

RecipeDetours-Veggie Chili

There were lots of hits on Recipe Detours recently, especially for the Veggie Chili, which is a fan favorite. Here it is. VeggieChili.

Since we are still using coolers on the porch, no recipes from here until fridge gets fixed. GE can you hear me? Not fun for a cook! Finding that canned soups, chilis, sauces are filled with salt, sodium. Even the “healthy” choices.

HeirLoom

Happy Birthday bro’ Joe. Personification of loyalty and class. Sports maven with sass. Next rhyme too obvious. Trousers tailor heir. 3 sons’ Dad beyond compare.

On a cool sunny September Sunday, it’s time to make Indian chicken. Not as good as Joey3Sticks’ “Coogan”, maybe better. It’s my twist on an old Burmese recipe using late summer heirloom tomatoes and hot peppers from the farmstand. Check it out at Recipe Detours. Pats at 4.

Ben ran into Jonathan Groff at brunch, then went to see Ethel Merman, I mean Bernadette Peters in Follies. Tickets were free. What is a proprietary eponym?

Our Stevie Sancho has found his new hidalgo. Best day in a thirty-three year caddy career. And Adam Scott is hot. May watch the PGA again after all. Animal house meets Saturday night live. The JoeyPants and GaryShirts Show. Don’t ask. Brothers-in-law. I’ll be doing the shoulder Tango for a few weeks. Don’t ask.

Equity markets cratering. Fear not, there’s no where else in the world to put your money. Bond market fine. Things will stabilize. At what level is the question. Anderson Cooper is everywhere. Day and night. Kinda the Gordon Ramsay of journalism. At least somebody is working in August. While Rome burns.

Hey, Chad. Ocho Cinco is not Ochenta y cinco.
